Assistance dogs as an adjunct clinical therapy for veterans

Our presentation focuses on how the training of the Handler (veteran) to shape and develop their assistance dog contributes directly to positive ‘transformation’ for the veteran and their family. The placement, training and support of a high quality accredited assistance dog with a veteran affected by PTSD has been demonstrated to provide valuable contributions to reductions in PTSD symptomology. Australian governments must get behind funding this important complementary support for veterans; no more research is required to establish the value of these dogs.
